The Miracle of Milk

Confession: If I were a man, I’d be a total boob guy. I don’t mean to sound crude…but breasts ARE awesome! Your breasts, believe it or not, were ready for work before you were even born. As an article from BabyCenter puts it “By the time you were born, your main milk ducts – a network of canals designed to transport milk through your breasts – had already formed.”. Those girls were literally born ready. You’ve gotta have mad respect for that.

I was planning on writing a really neat post all about how awesome those lady parts are-BUT I think the article from BabyCenter lays it all out there so well, I’m just going to link you to them here.

Instead, here are some other crazy cool facts about our brilliant bosoms and the milk they make.

  • They are unique. “No other primate has a permanent breast,” writer Carole Jahme (who holds a master’s degree in evolutionary psychology) explains in The Guardian. “In non-human primates (and other mammal species) a full breast is a clear indication the female is suckling young,” she adds. “Not so in humans.”
  • They could save the economy. If 90% of mothers could comply with current medical recommendations around breastfeeding, our economy could save $3.7 billion in direct and indirect pediatric health costs, with $10.1 billion in premature death from pediatric disease.
  • Your milk has it’s own unique smell. Your baby can smell you. Newborns have a strong sense of smell and know the unique scent of your breast milk. That is why your baby will turn his or her head to you when he or she is hungry.
  • They make perfect food for your baby. PERFECT. Think I’m joking? This is coming from the WHO, guys and gals!

    BAM. Nuff said.

For tips on breastfeeding, check out this great online magazine created by La Leche League.

For a more comprehensive list on the benefits of breastfeeding, the Natural Resources Defense Council has a very informative outline found here.

Lastly, a somewhat silly article from Thought Catalog highlighting our terrific tatas can be found here.
